[4] Saint Barbara Branches

Today, on feast-day of Saint Barbara, I’d like to introduce you to the tradition of cuting St. Barbara Branches.

Quick note: I like the idea of bringing nature {life} home, I’m not that interested into martyrdom. Still, I think a short explanation appropriate. Cutting of St. Barbara Branches, meaning branches off fruit-bearing trees, is an old tradition on the 4th of december. Behind that traditions stand the tragic tale of St. Barbara, a young Christian martyr of the 3rd century. She macerated a broken branch the day she was thrown into prison for her faith and that branch blossomed on the day of her death. These branches shall brighten our homes dark winter days.

On a less serious level they are said to bring luck if the buds flourish before Christmas 🙂

I’ll let you know if they flourish in time 😉
